The Breaking Point Is Not A Club

A fellow blogger shared with me last night that she doesn’t like my writing anymore, because The Breaking Point has become ”a club.” Intrigued, I probed a little bit and learnt that she feels ill-prepared to participate in the exchanges that take place here regarding politics.

I realise that not everyone is interested in politics, but this isn’t a politics blog by a long shot. I dish about a little bit of everything here, including the love of my lifesexuality, race, society, the way I feel about the world and the people in it, musicreligion and other topics that I think are worth writing about.

It probably shouldn’t have, but her observation got under my skin. A few months ago, an infrequent visitor to The Breaking Point made a similar observation, writing that that this and some of the blogs listed under the “Food For Thought” category on my homepage turned her off because they comprise an Internet “circle.” I don’t think she anticipated that I would read her blog and see what she said, because sure enough she denied that she was referring to our blogs when I followed up with her. But was she right? No.

In retrospect, I shouldn’t have given what she said a second thought because I could tell by reading her blog, as well as the comments that she left here and on Creole In DC’s blog, that her elevator was stuck in the basement.

But the woman I was chatting with last night is intelligent and well-written. I hate to think that she and other intelligent readers who want to participate in the exchanges here believe, for whatever reason, that The Breaking Point is a club. It absolutely isn’t. No matter who or where a person is, if s/he has Internet access, this blog is open for business seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This is regardless of whether or not you agree with what I or any of the readers who comment here have to say.

I am opinionated, yes, which is why I have a blog. But there is room here for a wide range of opinions, and I encourage those who wish to express theirs intelligently to do so here. The diversity of opinions expressed by those who read The Breaking Point serves to make it what it began as and remains now: haute intelligence accessible to the masses. What could be more inclusive than that?
